ELECTIONS

 

            INDEX TO THE LAWS.
 

    When the poll shall be closed, the boxes to be opened
by the judges and the ballots publicly read by them,
—The clerks to enter, and keep an account of the
same, so that the number may be cast up,
—Ballots on which more names are written than
there ought to be, or which are deceitfully folded together,
or if the purpose is not plainly designated, to
be rejected,
    When the numbers are ascertained, the judges to
make out two statements, attested by the clerks, or one
of them, of the votes, &c. the numbers to be expressed
in words, and not in figures,
—To be in the form prescribed therein, or to the
like effect, attested by the clerks,
    The presiding judges, (or in case of inability, either
of the others,) to meet on the second day after the election,
with the books, &c. at the place of holding the
county courts,
—To meet on the day next after the election in the
city of Baltimore,
—When assembled, to case up the whole of the votes
of all the districts, and make out two statements and
certificates of the numbers of votes for each candidate,
—The certificates for delegates to the general assembly
to be directed to the chancellor, in the form
therein prescribed, or to the like effect,
—Same as to electors of the senate,
—Same as to electors of President and Vice-President
of the United States,
    Directions for returns of the elections for representatives
in Congress or electors of President and Vice-President,
where counties are divided for forming a district,
    If any of the judges should be prevented from attending,
the others may adjourn from day to day, until all
are assembled,
    The judges to lodge with the county clerks, within
one day from their meeting, the books of the polls of
all the districts in the counties respectively, with a certificate
of the votes given,
—To cause one other certificate to be enclosed to
the governor and council, endorsed on public service,
and placed in the nearest post office,
    In case of elections for delegates to the general assembly,
or for electors of the senate, the judges to cause
the returns, directed and transmitted as aforesaid to
the governor and council as aforesaid, to be addressed
to the chancellor, to be delivered by them,
    Copies, under seal, of the certificates lodged by
judges with the clerk, to be enclosed by them within
five days, to the governor and council, in like manner,
    The electors of president and vice president directed
to assemble on the first Wednesday of December
1808, and in every fourth year thereafter, at the city
of Annapolis, and perform the duties enjoined on them,
—Unless congress should otherwise direct, and in
that event, on the day thereby directed,
    For all elections for representatives, electors, &c. in
the city of Baltimore, and for sheriffs therein, as a part
of the county, the city divided into eight wards or districts,
—The city as enlarged to be divided into eight districts
according to the act of 1798, ch. 115, &c.
—Commissioners to be appointed for making the division,
by the mayor and city council,
