demand and receive, for all persons committed to the gaol of said
county, the sum of twenty-five cents per day for each prisoners, to
be levied and received according to law, in lieu of the sum now
allowed.

                                     CHAP. XCVII.
An Act to Incorporate Companies to make certain Turnpike Roads
    through the Counties of Montgomery, Frederick and Washington,

    and for other purposes.  Lib. TH. No. 5, fol. 595.

Passed Feb. 3, 1818.
    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
the two following companies shall be incorporated, to wit:  One for
making a turnpike road in the nearest and best direction in Montgomery
county, to Crampton's Gap in the South Mountain, and
thence in the nearest and best direction to William's-Port; and one
for making a turnpike road from Rockville to the line of the District
of Columbia, in direct communication with the city of Washington.
Two companies to
be incorporated.
    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That subscription books be opened for
a capital stock of three hundred thousand dollars, in shares of twenty
dollars each, and that subscription be taken for one hundred
thousand dollars of the same, at the city of Washington, under
the direction of Robert Brent, Daniel Carroll, of Duddington,
John P. Van-Ness, Roger G. Weightman, Benjamin G. Orr, William
Brent, Joseph Gales, junior, and John Davis; for one hundred
and twenty-five thousand dollars at George-Town, in the District
of Columbia, under the direction of Henry Foxall, John Mason,
Clement Smith, Washington Bowie, Thomas Peter, William
Whann, Francis Dodge, John Peter and Thomas T. Gannt; for
twenty-five thousand dollars at Rockville, under the direction of
Honore Martin, Thomas P. Wilson, Charles Gassaway, George
C. Washington, Richard Beall, and Solomon Davis; for twenty-five
thousand dollars at new Town, Trap, under the direction of
Joseph Smith, Patrick McGill, Grafton Duvall, John Thomas, John
Slifer and Henry Burkitt; and for twenty-five thousand dollars at
William's-Port, under the direction of Samuel Ringgold, Thomas
Buchanan, Edward G. Williams, Jacob T. Towson, Daniel Rentch,
Michael A. Finley and Edmund H. Turner, for the first before
mentioned road; and for a capital stock of fifty thousand dollars, in
shares of twenty dollars each, at the city of Washington, under
the direction of the first before mentioned commissioners, with the
addition of William Carroll and Adam Roch, for the last before
mentioned road; who are hereby appointed commissioners for the
purposes aforesaid, who shall, for each of the companies for which
they are respectively appointed, on or before the first Monday in
may next, procure books, and each enter as follows, to wit:  " We
whose names are hereunto subscribed, do promise to pay to the
president, managers and company, of the Rockville and William's-Port
Turnpike Road, the sum of twenty dollars for every share
of stock in the said company set opposite to our respective names,
agreeably to an act of the state of Maryland, entitled, An act
to incorporate companies to make certain turnpike roads through
the counties of Montgomery, Frederick and Washington, and for
other purposes.  Witness our hands this ___________ day of
Subscription 
books to be opened.
