  • Major General Baron deKalb was a German baron who served in the Colonies during the Revolutionary War. He was mortally wounded at Camden, South Carolina in 1780. In 1817, the Maryland House of Delegates passed a Resolution (No. 74) to memorialize General deKalb, but the statute was not erected until 1886.

    • Born into slavery on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1822. Tubman returned to Maryland many times to rescue her family and dozens of others who were enslaved. She became the most famous �conductor� on the Underground Railroad; between 1850 and 1860 she made at least thirteen trips into slaveholding territory to guide as many as seventy enslaved people to freedom. During the Civil War, Tubman worked for the Union Army as a cook and nurse, and also served as an armed scout. She was the first woman to lead a military expedition during the Combahee River Raid, which liberated more than 700 enslaved people in South Carolina.

    • This tree honors all Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers. A flag is raised by the tree in their honor on appropriate days commemorating America's soldiers and veterans.
    St. Mary's City Cannon
    • St. Mary's City Cannon, State House grounds. This cannon was brought to Maryland from England by the first settlers in 1634 and mounted on the walls of the fort at old St. Mary's. It was recovered from the St. Mary's River in 1822 and presented to the State in 1840 by Rev. Joseph Carbery. The tablet was placed by the Peggy Stewart Tea Party Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution of Annapolis, Maryland, on Maryland Day, March 25, 1908

    USS Bell
    • USS Maryland Bell, State House grounds. The battleship USS Maryland was decommissioned in 1947 and its bell was presented to the state and installed on the State House grounds in 1960.

    Memorial Plaque Honoring Matthew Henson
    • In honor of Matthew Henson, African-American explorer who was the first man to reach the North Pole, on April 6, 1906, during the Arctic expedition of U.S. Navy Commander Robert Edwin Peary. Born in Charles County, Henson is recognized as a co-discoverer, with Peary, of the North Pole. This memorial was the first state-sponsored memorial to an African-American in Maryland, 1961.

    The State House Building Commission Commemorates the building of the Annex to the State House in 1902-1905. This Annex, designed by Baltimore architects Baldwin & Pennington, contains the new Senate and House of Delegates Chambers.

    Commemorates the restoration work done in 1904-05, under the direction of John Appleton Wilson, to return the the Old Senate Chamber to what might have been its appearance when Washington resigned his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army while Congress was meeting there from November 1783 - August 1784.

    • In honor of Maryland's four Signers of the Declaration of Independence: William Paca, Thomas Stone, Samuel Chase, and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, on the 150th anniversary of that event, July 1926.

    • In honor of Thomas Johnson, Maryland's first elected governor. Erected by the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, 1928.
    Restoration of Old State House
    • Restoration of Old State House. In 1948, extensive repairs and improvements were made to the State House, including the repairs to the Dome, plasterwork in the Rotunda, new elevators, and wiring, heating and plumbing work.
    Renovation to Senate Chamber
    • Renovation to Senate Chamber. The work done in 1966 included new desks and chairs, provision of space for the press, removal of plaster molding on walls, removal and replacement of accoustical tiles, new carpet and repainting.
    National Historic Trust
    • National Historic Trust. The Maryland State House was designated a National Historic Landmark in December 1960. This plaque was placed on the State House grounds in 1963.
    Site of Methodist Church
    • Site of Methodist Church. The Old Methodist Meeting House on State Circle, built ca. 1788 on the former site of the old market house and used for a few years as a print shop, was torn down in 1817.
