In January 2021, the Governor created the Maryland Citizen Redistricting Commission (Executive Order 01.01.2021.02).

The Commission is charged with preparing Maryland's two redistricting plans: one for legislative election districts, and one for Congressional election districts. Further, the plans must respect natural boundaries and geographic integrity, and be as equal in population as possible. The Commission will recommend these plans to the Governor for submission to the General Assembly in January 2022.

In preparing maps for these redistricting plans, the Commission may hold regional summits, maintain an electronic portal, and otherwise provide opportunities for the public to participate in the redistricting process.

Appointed by the Governor, the Commission consists of ten members The Governor names the Chair (Executive Order 01.01.2021.02).
