Established in 1986 as Medical Biotechnology Center under University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, Research Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology adopted its present name when it moved to School of Medicine at University of Maryland, Baltimore in July 2010.

Center studied health-related aspects of molecular biology and biotechnology at applied and clinical levels. It fostered bioscience collaboration with other University System of Maryland institutions in which medical research expertise and access to clinical resources were necessary.

Discontinued by Oct. 2025.

In June 2006, formation of the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore was approved by the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland; however, accreditation of the School was delayed due to budgetary constraints. In 2009, a Public Health Program was approved in the School of Medicine.
