State Archivist & Commissioner of Land Patents
Elaine Rice Bachmann
Elaine Rice Bachmann was appointed Maryland's fifth State Archivist in July 2021. She is the first woman to serve in this role, the duties of which also include serving as the Commissioner of Land Patents and as the State Historical Records Coordinator for the Maryland Advisory Board of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Ms. Bachmann also serves as the Secretary of the State House Trust. She was first employed at the Archives in 1994 as Curator of Artistic Property, later serving as Director of Artistic Property and Deputy State Archivist. She has written and lectured extensively on the history of the State House and Government House and the state's historic collections.

Assistant State Archivist
Corey Lewis
Corey Lewis joined the Maryland State Archives in 1999 and was appointed Assistant State Archivist in 2022, becoming the first person of color to hold an executive leadership position at the agency. Throughout his career, Mr. Lewis has pushed for access, efficiency, and partnership. In his current role, he oversees Appraisal and Description, Constituent and Interagency Services, and Digital Acquisition, Processing, and Publication departments. Additionally, Mr. Lewis serves as a liaison to the Information Technology department and leads Community Collection initiatives.

Emily Oland Squires
Emily Oland Squires joined the Maryland State Archives in 1995 as a graduate student intern and became the agency's first Research Archivist in 1997. A Maryland native, Emily holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from McDaniel College in history and a Master of Arts from the University of Maryland Baltimore County specializing in public history. She has served as the Director of the Research, Education, Outreach and Reference departments for the Archives. Ms. Oland Squires was appointed as Assistant State Archivist in 2022 and currently holds responsibility for those areas, as well as the Special Collections, Conservation, Library and Government Reports and Publications divisions.
