84 Maryland Queen Anns County To wit whereas a certain negro man named Sam who commonly calls himself Sam Bentley has made application to me for a certificate of freedom under an Act of the General Assembly of Maryland passed at November Session 1805 I do therefore Certify to all whom it doth or may concern that by the last will and Testament of a certain Arthur Emory late of Queen Anns County deceased duly executed on the 7.th day of September in the year 1799 and proved in my Office on the 18.th day of September in the year 1801 a certain boy named Samuel born the 11.th Jany 1795 of a light complexion five feet nine inches in heighth a scar on his left wrist and a scar also on his left thigh just above the knee joint was manumitted and set free by the last will & Testament of the said Arthur Emory his freedom to commence on the first Christmas day after he shall have attained the age of twenty eight years. His person identified by a certain Theodore Emory to whom the said negro Sam was bequeathed by the last will & Testament of the said Arthur Emory.
