    The State of Maryland Queen Anns County To Wit

         Whereas a certain negro man named Benjamin
has made application to me for a certificate of his
Freedom under an act of the General assembly of
this State passed November Session Eighteen hundred
and five
                               I do therefore hereby certify to all
persons whom it doth or may concern that by
the last Will and Testament of a certain Rebecca
Hammond late of Queen Anns County deceased
duly executed on the 12.th day of August in the Year
eighteen hundred and eight and proved in my
office on the 19.th day of October in the Year Eighteen
hundred and twelve a certain negro man named
Benjamin very black five feet ten Inches high
having lost part of his right Ear was manumitted
and set free his freedom to commence on the
first day of January in the Year Eighteen hundred
and eighteen               His person identified by
a certain William Downing
         Given under my hand this 1.st day of August
in the Year eighteen hundred and eighteen

                              Queen Anns County
