110 State of Maryland Queen Anns County To wit whereas application has been made to me by a certain negro man named George for a certificate of freedom under an Act of the General Assembly of Maryland passed at November Session 1805 I do therefore certify to all persons whom it doth or may concern that by the last will and Testament of a certain James Griffith duly executed on the 18th day of Jany Eighteen hundred and twenty one and proved in my Office on the 24th day of Augt Eighteen hundred and twenty two a certain negro man named George of a yellowish complexion five feet six Inches in height about thirty or thirty five years of age a small scar a little above the upper part of his nose and directly between his eye brows also a small scar between the joints of the first and second fingers of his left hand a defect both in his speech and hearing was manumitted and set free His freedom to commence on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and twenty five His person was identified by the oath of a certain John Hassett the Executor appointed by the will of the said James Griffith Given under my hand and the seal of my office this 6.th [Seal] day of January Anno Domini Eighteen hundred & twenty seven Tho C Earle Rr Wills Queen Anns County NB The former certificate held by George was this day returned to me much defaced and a second granted to him of this date Augt 6 1832 Tho C Earle |
