To the Clerk of Kent County
                               I hereby certify that Francis Jones
a negro man about twenty one years of age
of a dark complexion about 5 feet 5¾ inches
high with a scar on the back of the left
hand near the wrist is free having been free
born was raised in Kent County and
brought up to farming by me
                                           A W Sparks
                                     Sept 7th     1849

Filed and recorded September 7th 1849 and
certificate of freedom issued as follows
State of Maryland Kent County to wit
                        I Joseph Redue Clerk of Kent
County Court hereby certify that it hath
been proved by testimony which is satisfactory
to me that the bearer hereof a negro man
named Francis Jones aged about twenty one
years, feet, five and three fourth inches
high, of a dark complexion with a small
scar on the back of his left hand near
the wrist was born free and raised in Kent
County                    In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
( seal of              )    my name and affix the seal of Kent County
(Kent County     )    Court this seventh day of September in the
(Court Maryland)    year Eighteen hundred and forty nine
