    To the Clerk of Kent County Maryland
                      The undersigned hereby certifies that Charles James
(a colored man) formerly the servant of Martha Brown of Kent
County has served out his time of servitude in september last and
is now entitled to a certificate of manumission from the Clerk
of this County   Charles was purchased from Martha Brown by
me in the year 1841 and he has been in my possession since
that time                                             George H. Willson J.P.
                                                          December 24th 1849
I hereby certify that negro man now present is the identical person
mentioned above by the name Charles James
                                              Aravilla Collins
                                              December 27th 1849

Charles is 5 feet 2 inches high black complexion about 44 years
old & has a scar on the left little finger see Liber J. N. G. No 2
page 363 one of the Record Books of Kent County  Filed and recorded
December 27th 1849 and certificate of Freedom issued as follows
State of Maryland Kent County sct
                         I Joseph Redue Clerk of Kent County Court hereby
certify to all whom it doth or may concern that it appears by the records
of Kent County aforesaid that a certain Martha Browne of the said County by her
certain Deed of Manumission bearing date on the seventeenth day of september
in the year Eighteen hundred and thirty five did manumit liberate
set free and discharge from slavery a negro man named Charles born on
the 17th day of September in the year Eighteen hundred and five I further certify
that a negro man now present (the bearer hereof) called and known
by the name of Charles James aged about forty four years five
feet two inches high of a black complexion and has a scar on the
left little finger has proved by testimony which is satisfactory to me
that he is the identical person mentioned and described by the name
of Charles in the Deed of Manumission above referred to and that he
was raised in Kent County   In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
(  seal of             )         name and affix the seal of Kent County Court this
(Kent County     )         twenty seventh day of December in the year Eighteen
(Court Maryland)         hundred and forty nine      Joseph Redue Clerk of
                                                                            Kent County Court state of Maryland
                            Issued and recorded on the 27th day of December 1849
