Kent County, Certificates of Freedom, 1849-1864

             To the Clerk of Kent County Court
                               I hereby certify that Charles Gleaves who is now
present and applying for a certificate of Freedom was free
born and was raised in Kent County and is now about twenty
one years of age                                    A. W. Sparks
Dec 17th 1849
       5 feet 5 inches high Light complexion with a scar near
the nail of the Middle finger on the right hand
       Filed and recorded December 17th 1849 and certificate
of freedom issued as follows
          Maryland Kent County sct
                               I Joseph Redue Clerk of Kent County Court
hereby certify to all whom it doth or may concern that it hath
been proved by testimony which is satisfactory to me that the
bearer hereof a negro man named Charles Gleaves aged about
twenty one years five feet five inches high of a Light complexion
with a scar near the nail of the middle finger on the right
hand was born free and raised in Kent County
(  seal of             )         In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
(Kent County     )         my name and affix the seal of Kent
(Court Maryland)         County Court this 17th day of December
                                    in the year Eighteen hundred and forty nine

                                                          Kent County Court Maryland

present & Applying for a certificate of freedom was born free
and raised in Kent County and is now about twenty nine years
of age & of a black complexion   witness my hand this 24th Dec

    Jake is five feet eight inches high & has a small scar over
