107 To The Clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County This is to certify that a negro man named Jas Graves now present and applying for a certificate of Freedom was born free and raised in Kent County Jary 12th 1858 Benjamin Fiddis James is 6 feet ½ inch high and of Light Complexion Filed recorded and certificate issued Jary 12th 1858 by Jesse K Hines Clerk Maryland Kent County Sct on this 22nd day of January 1858 personally appeared Pere Tilghman (free negro) of Kent County before me the Subscriber a Justice of the peace for Kent County and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that he has lost his certificate of freedom given him by the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County that it was lost or stolen from his Pocket about ten days ago and that he has not sold nor loaned nor given it to any other person but that the same was really lost to him Sworn before James Graves To the Clerk of the Circuit Court for Kent County I hereby certify that negro Pere Tilghman now present and applying for a certificate of freedom is personally Known to me and that I have heard Mrs Harriett Thomas the widow of John Thomas from whose Estate Pere got free speak of him as having obtained his freedom from her Husbands Estate I further Certify that Mrs Thomas called a few days ago to see me and to request me to assist Pere to get his papers And from my knowledge of Pere I have no doubt that the account he gives of Losing his pass is true A N Sparks Jary 23rd 1858 |
