Somersett fs:  Mathew Hosea Late of Somrsett County planter was attached
to answer unto Stephen Couston of a plea of trespass upon ye Case &c
And whereupon the same steven pr Geo Dashiell his attorney
       Complaines that whereas the said steven is a good true faithfull and Honest Leige
       Subject of Our Lord the King that now is and as Such from the time of his Nativity
       hitherto hath Behaved and Demanded himselfe & from all Kind of theft Larceny
       fellowing or any shuc like wicked and Base Crime or any Blot or suspection of
       the same from the time of his Nativity hitherto free and unatainted untouched and
       unsuspected hath Lived Behaved held and Governed himselfe & of a good Name fame
       Estemation and Creditt by the whole time afd was held and requested & Called Nevertheless
       the afd Mathew not Being Ignorant of the premisses but envying the Happy Estate and
       Condition of the same steven and Maliciously Plotting and Intending him the same
       Stephen in his good Name fame Creditt and Estemation afd to hurt & Detract & him
       the Same stephen into Trouble Vexation and Infamy to Induce and Case him the same
       Steven Innocently to be brought in Danger of forfeiting four fold Suffering Corporall
       punishm.t and the Pillory as the Law in such Cases Directs the day afd Anno Dom one
       thousand seven hundred and twenty six at stepny Parrish in somersett County afd
       within the Jur of this Court in the presents and hearing of sundry faithfull
       Liege Subjects of Our Lord the King these falce Infamous Scandelous Malicious &
       aprobrias words and Lies with an Audible Voice of him the said steven Maliciously
       did Pronounce assert rehearse Publish and speake viz.t (that steven Costin speaking
       of and meaning the afd steven was a hogg stealing rogue (and that the said
       Mathew Meaning the said Mathew Hosea himselfe would make a hogg Stealing dope
       of him (of him the said steven Costan Meaning) by reason of the speaking asserting
       Publishing and Declearing of which falce Malicious Infamious scandelous & approbrias
       Words and Lies the Said Steven not Only in his good name fame Creditt & Estimation
       afd is much hurt and Damnified but also sundry Sums of mony & tob.o for Clearning
       up his Innocency in that part is forced to Expend whereupon he says he is worse &
       hath Damage to the value of thirty pounds Curr.t Mony of Maryland & thereupon
       he Brings suite &c
                                                               Dashiell P Quer Pledges &c  Jno Doe Richd Roe

          And the afd Mathew Hosea by ^Levin^ Gale his attorney Comes and Defends the force &
       Injury when &.c   And prys Leave to Imparle hereunto untill the Next Court and
       he hath it and the same day is given unto the afd Plft here also &c

             Att which said next Court to witt the twentieth day of June Anno Dom one thousand
