1728 152 Had from his father & Sold to Mr Francis Allen ye Said Deponant selling ye Land run out for Cornelias Morris Told him why would be Trouble himselfe in saying his Land run to ye Creek when it only run from the Branch & ye Said Cornelias Morris Said yt he knew that butt he would say so because he would have a priviledge in yt Place & This Deponant further Saith that at ye Survey when James Atkinson and Walter Lane was att Law they Begining at ye Same Sipruss & Mr Jos: Gray being Called as an Evidence & Sworn Said that he Sent for James Henderson & Jn.o Ellas & they Come & pointed in the Swamp & said that Some of them Bold Sipruss Standing Just by Where this Deponant Saw this Marked Sipruss was ye very Corner tree of M.r Jos: Grays Land where he Left of & ye first Corner tree of Cornelias Morris Land where he begins which he bought of John Townsend Sen.r & John Townsend Jun.r being Psent there Declared upon Oath he Minding his Fathers Cattle his Mother Coming out to him Shewed him the Corner tree of ye Land that he Gave him which was ye Said Sipruss tree afd Standing by ye Bridge afd and this Deponant further Saith Not Will.m Handy Geo: Tull The Deposition of Wescoate Gray aged about thirty four years being Sworn upon ye Holy Evangelist of almighty God Saith yt his Father Told him yt one James Henderson & John Ellis was both of them at ye takeing up ye Land Called africa & ye Deponant Saith yt he Can remember yt John Ellis Came to ye House of his Father & his father asked him if he Could Show ye first Bounder of ye Land Called africa & he went & Shewed him in ye Edge of ye Branch Near the the Plantation & Said hereabouts is ye tree & my father Jos: Gray went & found the Said tree within about forty yards being a marked Sipruss being above ye Bridge & ye Said Jn.o Ellis told my father yt after they Had Marked ye first Bounder they Went Over ye Said Branch on a Indian Bridge & said they marked no tree afterwards & further this Deponant Saith Not W.m Handy The above Deposition taken before us ye Subscribers this 14.th day Geo: Tull of Janry 1728/9 The Deposition of Thomas Gray aged about forty years or thereabouts Being Sworn upon the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God before us the Subscribers on ye 14.th day of Janry Ann.o Dom 1728 Saith that at a marked Bald Sipruss Standing in a branch now Called Mount Hope Branch above an Old Goeing Over is the Begining tree of America as I the Deponant hath been Sold Informed by my father Joseph Gray and this Deponant further Saith Not Will.m Handy Geo: Tull |
