March Court 1725 95 to turn them away nor was I of ability to afford them Such Entertainment as travellers required to refresh themselves when travelling sum therefore seing my Oppression offered in Satisfaction for their Entertainm.t and I being a Literate and unlearned man and not Knowing the Law was Ignorant that I did transgress or act Contrary to Law in So doing and some makeing use of this my Ignorance have Informed against me and I am in danger of being damnifyed humbly Craves of your Worships that you would take it into your wise Considerations and be Easie in your wise Judgm.t against me for Committing so Ignorant a transgression and Since being better Informed humbly Craves a Lycence that so I may Comply with the Law for the future and hoping your worships will Judge Charitably and Easie the burthen of your Petitioner who as in duty bound Shall ever pray Thomas Mumford The Petition afd being Read and heard and the premisses Considered Its thereupon ordered by the Court that the Said Thomas Mumford have Liberty to Keep an Ordinary or house of Entertainment for the Benefitt of all travellers that have any Occasion to pass a Long that way he first giveing Security to Comply with an act of assembly of the province now in force Entituled an act for the regulating of Ordinarys and for the better Regulating of Ordinary Keepers or Inholders within this province &c Whereupon the Said Thomas Mumford together with John Atkinsona nd Abraham Smith all of Somersett County (his Securitys) present in Court acknowledged themselves Indebted unto the right honrble the Lord Proprietary of this province his heirs and Successors in the Sum of twenty pounds Sterling Joyntly and Severally on their bodys goods or Chattells Lands or tenements to be Levied for the use of the Said Lord Proprietary his heirs and Successors In Case the Said Thomas Mumford do not in Every respect Comply with the afd Act of assembly in relation to Ordinary Keepers or Inholders and also to pay unto the honrble Philemon Lloyd Esq.r or hi deputy Secretary of the province of maryland or his order the Sum of five hundred pounds of tobo p year for Every year he shall Keep such Ordinary or house of Entertainment &c
and She being Since dec.d your humble Petitioner being the person that was at great Charge on her acco.t when Living prays that your worships to give him Orders for the receiving the Said Tobacco and your humble Petitioner Shall be Ever bound to pray as wittness my hand his James I Burnett marke the petition afd being read and heard and the premisses Considered It's thereupon Ordered by the Court that the Said three hundred pounds of tobo formerly allowed the afd Esther Taylor be paid by the Sherr of Somersett County unto the afd James Burnett &c |
