34 Menconed Came and made return that he hath here ready twelve &c as by his said preceipt he was Commanded and Now hereafterwards to witt the same day & Year Came as well the afd Plft as the afd defts by their attorneys afd and the Jurors of that Jury therein Impannelled being Called Likewise Came to witt Merrick Ellis, John Dennis Senr, John Fleming, Robert Mitchel, Robert Mills, Thomas Peale, Robert Collier, John Townsend Sen.r, John Tull, William Bratton, Joseph Houston, & Thomas Collins who being duely Elected tryed and Sworn to say the truth of the premisses upon their Oath do say that the afd Eliz.a Hobs wife of the afd Noble Hobs is Guilty of speaking the scandelous words afd; of the afd Philip Covington as he above against her hath Complained and do assess the damages of the afd Philip by occasion of the speaking of the words afd besides his Costs and Charges by him about his Suite in that part Expended to five pounds Currant money and for those Costs and Charges to one pound of tobo Therefore it is Considered by the Court here the fifteenth day of June anno Dom one thousand seven hundred & twenty five afd that the afd Philip Covington Recover against the afd Noble Hobs and Elizabeth his wife as well the sum of five pounds Curr.t money & one pound of tobo his damages (841) afd by the Jurors afd in form afd assessed as also the Sum of Eight hundred & forty one pounds of tob.o to the same plft at his request for his Costs and Charges afd by the Court hereof Increas adjudged & the afd Defts in Mercy &c
years Complaines that whereas the said Ann a good true and Chast subject of Our Lord the King Now is and as a good true Chast pious and honest virgin from the time of her Nativity hitherto hath always Governed and behaved herselfe and of good name fame Condition Creditt Conversation and repute as well by all her Neighbours as all other good people to whom she was Known hath been accounted Esteemed and reputed and Never any fornication adultery Incontinency or any such wicked ^or^ base Crime Committed or perpetrated and from all Note Spott or Suspicion of any such Crime by the whole Course of her Life Hitherto hath Remained Lived and Continued by means whereof the same Ann Covington Hath Obtained the Love favour and Good will of all her Neighbours and Other Good People of this Province Nevertheless the said Love Hobbs not Ignorant of the Premisses But Envying the Happy Estate and Condition of the Same Ann and Maliciously Intending the said Ann of her Good Name fame Creditt Estimation and repute afd to Deprive and also into Danger Inocently of Paying six hundred pounds of Tobacco Thirty shillings or Being whiped the fifth day of March seventeen Hundred and Twenty four at the County afd within the Jur of this (Court) |
