purpose directed by William Stoughton Esq.r then one of the Justices of the peace for this County
the said Noble being Charged for having begott a bastard Child by the body of Honour Norgate a single
woman then Lately delivered of a bastard Child in the presence of Divers Subjects of Our Lord the
King openly with a loud voice did publickly affirm and declare affirm viz.t you (the afd
Thomas Cary meaning) need not goe after Noble Hobs (the afd Noble Meaning) for the father of that
Child (the bastard Child of the afd Honour meaning) for I (the said Elizabeth herselfe Meaning) say
that Philip Covington (the afd Philip Meaning) gott that Child (the bastard afd Meaning) by the body
of Honour Norgate (the afd Honour Norgate meaning) whereas in truth the said Philip Never Comes
omitted or perpetrated any fornication adultery or any such Like wicked and Base Crime By
Reason of the Speaking and Publishing of which said scandolous and approbrious wood words
and Lyes the said Phillip is not only Extreemly Hurt and Damnified In his Good Name fame Creditt
and Estimation afd amongst his Neighbours afd and other worthy Persons to whome he was
Known But also is Brought in Danger Inocently of paying Twelve hundred pounds of
of Tobacco Three pounds Current Mony or Being whipt and also Divers sum's of money
and Tobacco to Expend for the Clearing his Inocence in that part whereby he says he is worse and hath damages
to the Value of fifty pounds Curr mony and Thereof he Brings this Suite &c    With this that the said
Phillip Covington is and will verifie That these words (Vizt) I say that Phillip Covington Got
that Child By the Body of Honor Norgate According to the Phraise Intelligence and Comon Usual
Accoptation of the People Dwelling and residing in Somersett County afd Do signify as much and
are Equivolent to these words (Vizt) I say that Phillip Covington Begot that Child by the Body of
Honor Norgate
                                                                      L Gale P Quo Pledgs &c John Doe Richd Roe

And the said Noble Hobbs and Elizabeth his wife By George Dashiell their Attorney Come and Defend
the fource and Injury when &c And Pray Leave to Imparle Hereunto untill the Next Court Court
and They He do it and the same day is Given to the afd Phillip Covington also   Att which said Next
Court to witt the fifteenth day of June Ano Dom One thousand seven hundred and Twenty five Came
again as well the afd Phillip Covington as the ^afd^ Noble Hobbs and Elizabeth his wife By their attorney's afd
and the said Noble Hobbs and Elizabeth by their said attorney as Before defend the fource and Injury when
&c       And Pleads not Guilty and for Tryall Puts Theirselves upon the Country   Dashiell P Def
                                                                            and the Plft in Like manner      L Gale

       Thereupon Command is given to the Sherr of Somersett County that Immediately he Cause to
    Come here twelve &c by whom &c who Neither &c to recognize &c becaus as well &c of which said preceipt
    the said sherr to witt Joseph McClester Gent.m  Now here at this day to witt the same day and Year Last
