            June Court               1725        23

to witt the fifteenth day of June ann.o Don One thousand seven hundred twenty three five Comes the said
Comfort Newman in Custody of the Sherr afd into whose Custody before that time was Committed for the Cause
afd and the said Comfort Newman being by the Sher sett to the barr is thereupon Instantly demanded how
she would acquitt herselfe of the premis felony afd saith that of the felony afd she is noe ways Guilty
thereof and thereof for tryall puts herselfe upon the Country and Levin Gale who for his said Lordship
in this behalfe prosecutes Likewise                    
                                                                        Thereupon Command is given to the Sherr of Somersett
County that Immediately he Cause to Come here twelve &c who Neither &c to recognize &c because as well &c 
of which said Preceipt the said Sherr to witt Joseph MccClester Gent makes return that he hath here
Ready twelve &c as by his said preceipt he was Commanded and the Jurors of that Jury therein
Impannelled being Called Came to witt Merrick Ellis, John Dennis Sen; John Fleming; Robert Mitchell
Adam Hitch, Thomas Peale, Robert Collier, John Townsend Sen, John Tull, William Bratton, Joseph
Houlston and Thomas Collins who being duely Elected tryed & sworn to Say the truth in the premisses
upon their Oath do say that the said Comfort Newman is guilty of the felony whereof she stands
Indicted and whereas the said Comfort Newman  being found Guilty of the felony afd by the
Evidence of the party deprived of the goods afd therefore by Law noe four fold is due &c

          Wherefore it is Considered by the Court that the said Comfort New Man be whipt with
fifteen Lashes on the bear back well Laid on untill the blood appear and that ^she^ Stand in the pillowry
a quarter of an hour & that she be taken &c    And thereupon as to the Corporall Punishm.t
afd Command is given to the Sherr of Somersett County that he doe thereof Immediate Execution
according to the Judgm.t afd Rendered by whiping the afd Comfort Newman at the Publick whiping
post with fifteen Lashes on the bear back well Laid on untill the blood appear and by setting
her in the pillowry a quarter of an hour and afterwards in the Same Court the Sherr Returns that
he hath done the Execution of the Judgm.t afd as to the Corporall punishment afd he was Commanded
    Whereupon the said Comfort Newman is Ordered by the Court to give Security for paym.t of
all the Officers Fees due by means of the premisses afd   but for want thereof the Said Comfort
Newman is Committed into the Custody of the Sherr of Somersett County thereto remain &c the said Sherr
present here in Court took Charge of the said Comfort Newman accordingly &c

County planters for begetting a bastard Child & Committing fornication with a Certain
                Sarah Pusey                           William Lane foreman

          Thereupon Command was given to the Sherr of Somersett County that he should take the said
