a Chast person of his Lordships the Right honourable the Lord proprietarys province of Maryland and
as such from the time of his Nativity hitherto hath behaved and demeaned herselfe by reason whereof
she hath deservedly had & obtained the Love good will and affection of all her Neighbours and
Other Inhabitants of this province to whom she is acquainted and Known and without any fornication
adultery or any such Wicked and base Crime and without any the Least suspition of the same
hath hitherto Kept and preserved herselfe free Clear and unattainted Nevertheless the said George
being not Ignorant of the premises but Envying the happy Estate and Condition of the said Sarah
Malitiously plotting and fraudulently Intending the said Sarah not only into great trouble and
Infamy to bring but also Innocently to Cause her to be brought into danger of forfeiting six
hundred pounds of tobacco or suffering Corporall punishm.t the             day of November ann Dom
One thousand seven hundred and twenty three at Stepney Parish afd in the County of Somersett afd w.thin
the Jurisdiction of this Court these false feigned Infamous scandelous and opprobrious words
following of her the said Sarah having Communication and Speech Concering her the said Sarah
falcely and Malitiously did assert rehearse Pronounce publish assert and speak with an
audible voice vizt (meaning himselfe the said George) have Lay'n with Sarah White often or
severall times and the said George then being askt by a Certain William White what has meant
by so saying did further Malitiously and falcely then and there speak and assert the words
following (by God I have fuckt her which words as as much as if he had said I have had Carnall
Knowledge of the Body of the said Sarah White and are so Generally understood by acceptation of
all persons by reason of the speaking affirming Publishing and declareing of which falce Infamous
scandelous and opprobrious words the said Sarah not only in her good Name fame Cred.ts
Estimation and repute afd is very much hurt but also sundry sums of money and tobacco for
vindication of her Character in is forced to Expend whereupon the said Sarah saith she is worse
and hath damage to the value of fifty pounds Curr.t money of maryland and thereupon he Brings
suite &c                                  Pledges dep Jno Doe Richd Roe

       Whereupon the said George Gurley in his own proper person appears and thereupon the
said George Gurley at the prayer of the plfts ^Procheim amy^ attorney afd is adjudged to give Speciall Bail to the
action afd but for want thereof the said George Gurley is Committed into the Custody of the sherr of
Somersett County there to remaine &c the said sherr present here in Court took Charge of the said
George Gurley accordingly &c thereupon day is given unto the said George Gurley in Custody as afd
untill next Court and the same day is given to the plft also
          Att which said Next Court to witt Ninteenth day of June ann Dom one thousand seven hundred
and twenty three four Comes againe as well the said plft by her attorney ^Procheim amy^ afd as the said George Gurley
in Custody as afd by George Dashiell his attorney and the said George Gurley in Custody as afd by his
said attorney says that he Cannot gainsay the plft her action afd so as afd against him brought
nor Can he say but that the said plft ought to recover her damages by occasion of the premisses
