for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that she is five
feet two inches and one quarter of an inch high or thereabout
was raised in Caroline County says she is about thirty five years
old has a long scar on the upper part of her left cheek or rather
in her temple nearly opposite her left eye eye and extending
towards & near the eye has some slight scars on her right arm
has lost some of her upper fore teeth she is of the ordinary
complexion talks tolerably brisk and no other notable marks
that I have discovered      In Testimony whereof I have hereto
           set my hand and affixed the public seal of my office
(seal)   this first day of July Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and
           seventeen

Maryland Caroline County to wit

    Whereas on the twenty first day of March seventeen hundred and
Eighty seven Henry Downes of Caroline County by deed of manumission
duly executed acknowledged and recorded amongst the records
of Caroline County did manumit and set free a negro named Silas
to be free on the first day of January Eighteen hundred and Eight as
it appears of record and whereas the said Silas has made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of
assembly in such case made and provided.  And I being satisfied by
the Testimony of Henry Downes Sellers Esquire of the County aforesaid
that the said negro man named Silas for whom this certificate is
made is the Identical person mentioned in the said manumission I
do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from the
age expressed in said manumission he is forty years of age or thereabout
he is five feet seven inches and one fourth of an inch high
or thereabout was raised in Caroline County his complexion
not very Dark has a stammer in his speech and no other
    notable marks that I have discovered
