State of Maryland Caroline County to wit
Whereas heretofore to wit on the seventh day of September
in the year Eighteen hundred and two Charles Jones of
Caroline County by deed of Manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded amongst the records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a negro girl named
Chaney to be free on the first day of January eighteen hundred
and sixteen and whereas the said negro girl hath
made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
and being satisfied by the oath of Levin Swiggett of the County
afsd that the said negro girl named Chaney for whom this
Certificate is made is the Identical person mentioned in the
manumission afsd I do therefore grant her said application
and hereby certify that from the age expressed in the ^said^ manumission
afd she is about twenty two years of age was raised in Caroline
County is four feet eleven inches high or thereabout
has a scar jus below her left knee of a yellowish
complexion and no other particular marks that I have
discovered      In Testimony whereof I have hereto
                   set my hand and affixed the public seal of
    (seal)       my office this eighteenth day of June in the
                   year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and sixteen
