finger and a slight scar across his right fore finger
also a small black mole on the right side of his face near
his nose and not a very dark complexion but rather a good
looking smart decent fellow and no other notable marks
that I have discovered he says he is about twenty three years
old.      In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand
            and affixed the public seal of my office this 14th
(seal)   day of May Eighteen hundred and sixteen

Caroline County to wit      Whereas heretofore to wit on the Twenty
third day of December seventeen hundred and ninety nine Sarah
Hardcastle of Talbot County and Solomon Kenton of Caroline County
Executors of John Hardcastle dec.d by deed of manumission duly
Executed acknowledged and recorded amongst the records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a negro woman named Lydia to be
free and at perfect liberty from and after the first day of January
Eighteen hundred and six   And whereas the said negroe woman
named Lydia hath made application to me for a certificate of
her freedom agreeably to an act of assembly in such case made
and provided and being satisfied by the Testimony of Stephen Lucas
of Caroline County that the said negro woman named Lydia for
whom this Certificate is made is the person mentioned in the
manumission afs.d  I therefore grant her said application
    And hereby Certify that from the age expressed in the manumission
afs.d she is about twenty nine years of age was raised in Talbot
County she is five feet and about one fourth of an inch high has
a scar on her forehead between her eye brows and no other
notable marks which I have discovered and think necessary to
describe      In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand
                   and affixed the public seal of Caroline County Court
(Seal)          this twenty ninth day of May in the year of our Lord one
                   thousand Eight hundred and sixteen      Jo Richardson Clerk
