Caroline County ss.t  Be it remembered that on the fifth day of June
Eighteen hundred and nine I delivered to Negro Hesse a Certificate
a Copy of which is as follows to wit

   State of Maryland Caroline County to wit

    Whereas a Certain negro woman named Hesse heretofore to
wit on the second day of June in the year eighteen hundred
and two was manumated by Charles Blair Gentleman of Caroline
County to be free from and after the first day of January Eighteen
hundred and eight as by the said manumission remaining
of Record in Caroline County Court reference being thereto had
will appear.   And whereas the said negro woman named
Hesse hath made application to me for a Certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly; and upon the oath
of Doctor Robert Stevens that the said negro woman named
Hesse is the Identical person who was manumated as
as aforesaid I do hereby Certify that from the age expressed
in the said manumission; that the said negro woman
named Hesse is about twenty four years of Age five feet
high dark complexion was raised in Caroline County near
Hunting Creek has a scar on the second finger of the left
hand near the second joint and no other notable marks
which I can discover   In Testimony whereof I have hereto
           set my hand and affixed the public seal of my office
(seal)   this fifth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand
Eight hundred and nine;   Tho Richardson Clk Caroline County Court
