that he was twenty eight years of age or thereabouts on the seventh day of August last past
about five feet eight inches and a half high of a brown complexion was born and raised
in Caroline County and has a scar of a cut on his chin and another scar nearly in a range
with the outer Corner of his right eye and another scar on the left side of his head and
no other notable mark or scar that I have observed.  In Testimony whereof I hereto
             subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my office this 23d day of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a coloured man named Sylas Stanton for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born; and whereas also upon the oath of James Johnson of Caroline
County that the said coloured man named Sylas Stanton for whom this certificate
is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that he was about thirty twenty six years of age the fourth day of May last
past about five feet five and a half inches high of a brown complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a scar of a cut perpendicular on the
middle of his forehead & another scar on the outer corner of his right eye brow and
another long scar of a cut lengthwise on the top of his left foot and no other notable
mark or scar that I have observed      In Testimony whereof I hereto
           subscribe my name and affix the publick seal of my office this 23d

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas heretofore to wit on the
First day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five
a certain Thomas Cooper of Caroline County by Deed of Manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded among the Land records of Caroline County did
manumit and set free a certain negro boy named James to be free on the Twenty
fifth day of December Eighteen hundred and twenty six and the said negro
boy now a man named James having made application to me for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
and whereas also upon the oath of John Cooper of Caroline County
