Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

Eleven years of age or thereabouts about four feet three and three quarter
inches high was born and raised in Caroline County and of a brown
complexion has a small scar of a fresh burn on the under part of her
left arm above the wrist joint and another small scar resembling the
letter & on her right hand nearly over the joint of her thunb next
the wrist joint and no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and
(seal)      affix the public seal of my office this 21st day of November
              Anno Domini 1826   Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured woman named Caroline for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas
also upon the oath of Solomon Slanden of Caroline County that the said coloured woman
named Caroline for whom this certificate made was free born.  I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby certify that she is about Twenty four years of age five
feet one and a half inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County and of
a molattoe complexion has one small scar on her forehead over her right eye two small scars
on the inside of her right arm one above and one the other below the elbow joint and a
small black mole on the under lip of her left eye in the corner of the eye next the nose
and no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
                In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe my name and affix the public seal
(seal)        of my office this 21st day of December Anno Domini 1826

to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes
and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of
being free born and whereas also upon the oath of James Johnson of Caroline County
that the said coloured man named John Stanton for whom this certificate is
made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
