Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application has been
made to me by a coloured woman named Rebecca Hutchins for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
and where by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel
out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born and
whereas also upon the Oath of Nehemiah Saulsbury of Caroline ^County^ that the said
negro girl for whom this Certificate is made was free born  I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby certify that she is 4 feet eleven and a quarter
Inches high or thereabouts about Eighteen years of age ^was^ born and raised in
Caroline County and of a brown or dark molatto Complexion has two small
scars rather on the right side of her forehead and no other notable mark or
scar that I have discovered               In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
             my name and affix the public seal of my office this 27th day of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas heretofore to wit
on the thirty first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and twenty five a certain Elizabeth Dwiggins of Caroline County by
Deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among
the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain
negro woman named Clementina Hutson to be free from and after the date
of the said manumission  And the said negro woman named Clementina
Hutson having made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided and whereas also
upon the oath of James Sangston of Caroline County that the said negro
woman named Clementina Hutson for whom this certificate is made is the
same person mentioned in the said manumission  I do therefore grant her
said application and hereby certify that she is five feet and a Quarter
inches high or thereaobuts about eighteen years of age the first day of May
last was born and raised in Caroline county and of a molatto complexion has a
scar just in the edge of her hair on the left side of her forehead and a wart or mole
on the right side of the back of her neck and another wart on the back of her
