Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a molatto man named Montgomery Carney for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided
by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of
this State upon the Obtention of a Certificate of being free born and whereas also
upon the Oath of James Caulk of Caroline County that the said negro man named
Montgomery Carney for whom this Certificate is made was free born  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby Certify that he is five feet two and
three quarter inches high or thereabouts says he is about thirty five years of age
was born and raised in Caroline County and of a molatto complexion has a
small scar on the upper part and right side of his forehead and no other
particular mar or scar that I have discovered          In Testimony whereof
             I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public seal of my office this
(seal)     23d day of September Anno Domini 1826         Jo Richardson Clk of

        Cost 50 cts

freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by
which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this
state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born.  And whereas also
upon the Oath of James Caulk of Caroline County that the said negro
woman named Lydia Carney for whom this certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that that
she is five feet ^one^ and an half inches high or thereabouts says she is about
Twenty five years of age was born and raised in Caroline County and of a bright
molatto complexion has a very small mole under her left eye and no other
particular mark or scar that I have discovered               In Testimony
whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my
office this 23d day of September anno Domini 1826
