State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas heretofore to wit on the seventh
day of September Eighteen hundred and two      a certain Charles Jones of Caroline
County by Deed of manumission duly Executed acknowledged and recorded
among the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro
man named Stephen Dixon to be free and at his liberty from and after the first day of
January Eighteen hundred and seventeen  And the said negro man named Stephen
Dixon for whom this having made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided  And whereas also upon the
Oath of Charles ^William^ Jones of Caroline County that the said negro man named Stephen
Dixon for whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that he is five feet ^five^ and
an half inches high or thereabouts about thirty two years of age born and raised in
Caroline county and of a dark brown complexion has a small scar lengthwise in his
left eye brow four small scars on the upper part of his forehead and a scar of a
burn on the back part of his left arm below the elbow joint and two scars on the left
side of the back part of his head and no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public seal of
(seal)     my office this 13th day of September Anno Domini 1826

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro man named William Russum for a certificate of his freedom

agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said
act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention of a Certificate of being free born and  Whereas also upon the oath of
William Williams of Caroline County that the said negro man named
William Russum for whom this certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that he
is five feet seven Inches high or thereabouts says he was twenty three
years of age the tenth day of May last past was born and raised in Caroline
County and of a black complexion has a tollerable large scar of an ulcer
on his right breast and a scar of a cut lengthwise on the inside and above
the hand joint of his left thum and no other notable notable mark or scar that
I have discovered
