Friend to be free and at his liberty from and after the date of the said manumission
And the said negro man named Gabriel Friend having made application to
me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made
and provided and whereas also upon the Testimony of Daniel P. Richardson of
Caroline County that the said negro man named Gabriel Friend for whom
this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that he is five feet
seven and a Quarter inches high or thereabouts says he is twenty seven years of age
or thereabouts born and raised in Caroline County and of a black complexion
has a large scar of a burn on the top part of his right wrist and a scar on his
under lip occasioned by a bite in fighting and no other notable mark or scar
that I have discovered         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
             name and affix the public seal of my office the Sixteenth day of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas heretofore to wit on the ninth day of
December seventeen hundred and eighty four a certain Henry Downes of Caroline County
by Deed of manumission duly Executed acknowledged and recorded among the Land records
of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Daphne to be
free and at her liberty from and after the first day of January eighteen hundred and eight
and the said negro woman named Daphne having made application to me for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided and
whereas also upon the Testimony of Elizabeth Nicols of Caroline County that the said
negro woman named Daphne for whom this certificate is made is the same person
mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
Certify that she is four feet nine inches high or thereabouts about forty five years of age born
and raised in Caroline County and of a dark brown Complexion has a small flesh mole
above the left corner of her mouth and a scar of a burn on the back part of her left arm
above the elbow and the little finger of her right hand has been broke and is thick about
the end of it and no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this seventeenth day of August anno Domini 1826
