State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a molatto woman named mary Tilghman for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said act free negroes & molattoes are permitted to travel out of this
State upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born and whereas also
upon the testimony of Ann Love of Caroline County that the said molatto
woman named mary Tilghman for whom this Certificate is made
was free born.  I do therefore grant her said application and hereby
Certify that she is five feet and an half inch ^high^ or thereabouts says she is about
Twenty five years of age born and raised in Caroline County & of a
molatto complexion has a mole on the middle joint of her left fore
finger and several small scars on the back of her left hand a
very small scar between her eye brows & also two other small scars
between her eye brows something like pits of the small pox on her
right arm one on the back of her arm & the other on the top just
below the joint of the arm & no other notable marks or scars that
I have discovered.  In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
           my name & affix the public seal of my office this 7th
(seal)   day of august Anno Domini 1826   Jo Richardson Clk

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas heretofore to wit on the
Sixteenth day of June one thousand eight hundred and twenty four a
certain William Burton of Caroline County by Deed of manumission
duly Executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records
of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman
named Harriott to be free and at her liberty from and after the first day of
March eighteen hundred and twenty and the said negro woman named
Harriott having made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided.  And
whereas also upon the Oath of Loadman Shields of Caroline County that
the said negro woman named Harriot for whom this Certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
