Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a molatto man named Marcellus Mattee
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such
case made and provided by which said act free negroes and molattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the Obtention of a Certificate
of being free born.  And whereas also upon the Oath of Sarah Williams
of Caroline County that the said molatto man named Marcellus
Mattee for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby Certify that he is five
feet seven inches high or thereabouts says he is about twenty two
years of age born and raised in Caroline County and of a
very light molatto complexion has a scar obliquely across
the bridge of his nose and a nother scar of a recent cut on the
back of his right hand and no other notable mark or scar that
I have discovered            In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
           my name & affix the public seal of my office this

freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
by which said act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this
state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born.  And whereas also upon
the Oath of William Potter of Caroline County that the said molatto woman
named Hannah Sullivane for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I
do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that she is five feet
seven inches high or thereabouts about Twenty seven years of age was born and
raised in Caroline County and of a light molatto complexion has a small
scar on the top of her right arm lengthwise the arm & crosswise the joint of
the arm and no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public
(seal)     seal of my office this 1st day of August Anno Domini 1826
