State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas heretofore to wit:  on the
fifth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Eight
a certain Francis Caulk of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline County did manumit
and set free a certain molatto boy named Charles to be free and at liberty when he should
arrive at the age of Twenty five years and the said molatto boy (now a man Calling himself
Charles Causey) having made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided.  And whereas also upon the
Oath of Nimrod Andrew of Caroline County that the said negro man Charles for
whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his age as expressed
in the said manumission he is now about thirty years of age five feet six and a quarter
inches high or thereabouts of a molatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a small scar of a cut on his right cheek and another small scar of a cut on the right
side of his nose and two small scars in his left eye brow and no other notable mark or scar
that I have discovered      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix
(seal)      the Public seal of my office this 23d day of June Anno Domini 1826

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named Joshua Bell for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the
act of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate of
being free born:  And whereas upon the oath of Nimrod Andrew of Caroline County
that the said negro man named Joshua Bell for whom this certificate is made was free
born:  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that he is five
feet six and a quarter inches high or thereabouts says he will be Twenty four years of
age the fourteenth day of November next born and raised in Caroline County
nearly of a black complexion has three scars or marks under and near his right
ear and one other on his right jaw bone his left leg injured and ben inwards
and the skin almost one continual scar: and no other scars or marks that I
have discovered
