State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named Major Jolly for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such cases made and provided by which said act free negroes
and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born  and whereas upon the oath of Peter Johnson of Caroline County
that the said negro man named Major Jolly for whom this Certificate is mde was
free born   I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that he is
five feet seven and a quarter inches high or thereabouts says he was Twenty one years
age some time in May last was born and raised in Caroline County and of a dark
brown complexion has a tolerable large scar of a burn partly on the top of his left
arm below the elbow joint the middle finger on his right hand has been marked
between the end and middle joints and is larger than any of his other fingers and
no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the Public seal
(seal)      of my office this 13th day of June anno Domini 1826

me by a negro girl named Sarah Hutchins for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the Act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free
negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the Obtention of
a Certificate of being free born:  And whereas upon the oath of Nehemiah Saulsbury
of Caroline County that the said negro girl named Sarah Hutchins for whom this
Certificate is made was free born:  I do therefore grant her said application and
hereby Certify that she is four feet ten and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
says she is about seventeen years of age born and raised in Caroline county and
of a dark brown complexion has a scar of a cut about three inches long on the
inside & lengthwise of her left arm crossing the elbow joint and no other notable
mark or scar that I have discovered.   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
             my name & affix the public seal of my office this 21st day of
