Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas application hath been
made to me by a coloured woman named Mahala Jolly for a certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided by which
said Act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon
the obtention of a Certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the affirmation
of George T Millington of Caroline County that the said negro woman named
Mahala Jolly for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant
her said application and hereby Certify that she is five feet two inches high or
thereabouts says she is about thirty years of age was born and raised in Caroline
County and of a dark molatto Complexion has a small scar on the under part of
the left arm below the elbow joint another scar on the inner side of her right wrist
joint & another scar crosswise on the under side of her right arm about three inches
above the wrist joint and several scars of a scald on the top of the right foot and
no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the
(seal)     public seal of my office this 26th day of May Anno Domini 1826

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application
hath been made to me by a molatto man named Robert Casson for a certificate
of his Freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such Case made and
provided by which said act ^free^ negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel
out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And
Whereas upon the oath of William A. Cooper of Caroline County that
the said molatto man named Robert Casson for whom this certificate is
made was free born  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that he is five feet seven and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
says he will be twenty four years of age the seventeenth day of September
next was born and raised in Caroline County of a molatto complexion
has a large scar crosswise on the under part of his left arm about midway
between the wrist and elbow joints and another scar of a burn on
his right Instep and no other notable mark or scars that I have observed
             In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
(seal)     seal of my office this 30th day of May Anno Domini 1826
