James M.cJune of Caroline county that the said negro man named Jesse
is the same person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify (that from his age as expressed
in the said manumission he is forty five years of age was born and
raised in Caroline county of a black complexion about five feet eight and
three quarter inches high considerably marked in the face with the small
pox has six small scars on his left hand and wrist & two small scars
on his right wrist the smallest one on the top of the wrist joint & the longest
on the upper part of the knuckle bone of the wrist another long scar above
and nearly parallel with his left eye brow and another scar on his left
breast caused by a bite in fighting another scar on his under lip & another
scar behind his right ear and no other marks or scars that I have discovered
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public
(seal)     seal  of my office this 21st day of april Anno Domini 1826

The negro Jesse above described made Oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty
God that he lost the certificate of ^his^ freedom heretofore obtained from this office
and that he did not give it away sell it or otherwise convey it to or for
the use and benefit of any other negro or person of colour


State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a coloured man named Henry Friend for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the Act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said
act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon
the Obtention of a certificate of being free born and whereas also of my own
personal knowledge that the said Henry Friend for whom the Certificate is made
was free born.  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that
he is five feet nine and a half inches high or thereabouts says he was forty five
years of age the fourth day of April instant was born and raised in Caroline County
of a black complexion has a scar of a cut nearly perpendicular and near the
Corner of his right eye and marks of a cut across between the middle and
end joints of the two middle fingers of his right hand and a scar of a cut on
the big toe joint of his right foot and another mark of a cut on his right
leg and no other notable mark or scar that I have discovered
