of his under lip bit off and a large long scar under his left thigh begining
opposite the joint and running up the under part of his thigh and no other notable
mark or scar that I have discovered      In Testimony whereof I hereto
             subscribe my name & affix the public seal of my office this 25th

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a coloured man named Jefferson Hubbard for his certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made
and provided by which said act free negroes & molattoes are permitted to
travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born
And whereas also upon the Oath of Joseph F. Sisk of Caroline County that
the said coloured man named Jefferson Hubbard for whom this Certificate
is made was free born;  I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that he is about five feet nine and a quarter inches high
says he is twenty three years of age or thereabouts was born and raised
in Caroline County of a black Complexion has a large scar of a cut through
his left foot begining at the toe next the big toe and extending obliquely
up the top of his foot and no other mark or scar that I have discovered
In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
(seal)   public seal of my office this 7th day of may Anno Domini
           1825         Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit; On the Tenth
day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two Michael
Todd of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged &
recorded among the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free
a certain negro man named Sam to be free when he should arrive to the
age of Twenty four years and the said negro man named Sam (now calling
himself Samuel Todd) having made application to me for a Certificate of his
freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the Oath of Nathan Todd of Caroline County that
the said negro man called Sam is the same person mentioned in the
said manumission.  I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby Certify that he is forty five years of age or thereabouts he is about five
