State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit; On
the Twelfth day of February Eighteen hundred and five a certain
White Turpin of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded among the Land records Books of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a certain negro man named
Philip to be free and at perfect liberty from and after the first day of
January Eighteen hundred and six and the said negro man named
Philip having made application to me for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the Act of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the Oath of John Baynard of Caroline County
that the said negro man named Philip is the same person mentioned
in the said manumission.  I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that the said negro man named Philip is about
five feet two inches high says he is about fifty eight years of age was
born and raised in Caroline County of a black complexion the middle
joint of the middle finger of his left hand nearly stiff and strait
caused as he says by a bite in fighting the end joint of the little finger
of the same hand crooked and no other notable mark or scar that
I have discovered                     In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe
             my name & affix the Public seal of my office this 9th day

    State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit; on the sixth
day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety six
a certain Nathaniel Potter and William Potter of Caroline County by deed of manumission
duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a certain negro man called Joshua to be
free and at his freedom to commence and take effect from and after the twenty eighth
day of April Eighteen hundred & four and the said negro man called Joshua
having made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act
of Assembly in such case made and provided.  And I being satisfied of my
own personal knowledge that the said negro man called Joshua is the same
person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that the said negro man called Joshua is about
forty eight years of age five feet four and three quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a molatto complexion was born and raised in Caroline county and
the middle finger of his left hand off the end of his nose bit off & part
