State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit; on the twenty
second day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & twenty three
a certain Mary Traverse of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged & recorded among the land records of Caroline County did manumit &
set free a certain negro man named Aaron (otherwise called Aaron Traverse) to
be free & at perfect liberty from & after the date of the said manumission.  And the
said negro man named Aaron having made application to me for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the Oath of William Whitely Jun.r of Caroline County that
the said negro man named Aaron for whom this Certificate is made is the same
person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from the age as expressed in said manumission
the said negro man Aaron will be thirty years of age the Twenty second day of
March next he is about five feet four and three quarter inches high of a dark
brown complexion was born & raised in Caroline County & has a large
scar on his right knee      & no other mark or scar that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix
(seal)     the public seal of my office this 2nd day of Feb'ry Anno Domini

day of January Eighteen hundred & twenty five a certain William Whiteley of Caroline
County by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the
land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro man
named Esau to be free and at perfect liberty from & after the date of the said
manumission & the said negro man Esau having made application to me
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the Act of assembly in such case made
and provided and whereas also upon the Oath of the said William White
that the said negro man named ^Esau^ is the same person mentioned in the
said manumission.  I do therefore grant his said application & hereby
Certify that from the age as expressed in the said manumission the
said negro man named Esau is about the age of forty years he is about
five feet seven inches high of a dark brown complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County and has a small scar of a cut
a little above and on the outside joint of his left wrist & no
other notable mark or scar that I have observed
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(seal)     & affix the public seal of my office this 4th day of
             April Anno Domini 1825
