       State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit;
on the second day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
and six a certain Henry Downes of Caroline County by deed of Manumission
duly executed acknowledged and recorded among the land records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a certain negro girl named Matilda
to be free and at perfect liberty from and after the first day of January
in the year eighteen hundred and twenty and the same negro girl named
Matilda (now a woman) having made application to me for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the oath of Rachel Cooper of Caroline County that
the said negro woman named Matilda for whom this certificate is made
is the same person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from the age as expressed
in said manumission the said negro woman Matilda is now
thirty years of age in June last that she is about five feet five
inches high of a dark molatto or brown complexion was born & raised
in Caroline county and has a small scar on the thick and upper part
of her left arm caused as she says by a burn and no other particular
marks or scars that I have observed
             In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
(seal)     public seal of my office this twenty seventh day of December
             Anno Domini eighteen hundred and twenty four

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath been made
to me by a coloured man named Daniel Dickinson for a Certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the Act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said
act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a Certificate of being free born.  And whereas also upon the Oath of Seth Godwin
of Caroline County that the said coloured man named Daniel Dickinson
for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby Certify that he is five feet nine and three quarter inches
high or thereabouts says he will be twenty one years of age the fourth day of September
next was born and raised in Caroline County of a light molatto Complexion
has a small scar on the 3d joint of the fore finger of his left hand and several
small scars on the same fore finger and a large scar quite across the sole of his
right foot & two or three other scars about the inside ancle of his right foot
& no other particular marks or scars that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix
(Seal)             the public seal of my office this 1st day of February Anno
