State of Maryland Caroline county to wit;  Whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured woman named Ritty Groce for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free
negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the
obtention of a Certificate of being free born.  And whereas also upon the Oath of
Elijah Satterfield of Caroline County that the said coloured woman named Ritty
Groce for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that she is about Twenty seven
years of age about five feet four and a half inches high was born and raised
in Caroline County of a brown complexion and has a scar on the back of her
left hand about the size of the sixteenth of a dollar a natural mark
on the joint of her left wrist and another scar on her left thumb
which she says proceeded from a cancer and a mole on the centre of
her upper lip and no other mark or scar that I have discovered
             In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix
(Seal)    the public seal of my office this 7th day of December Anno

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas heretofore to wit; on the Fourteenth
day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and six a certain
Mary Hicks of Caroline county by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged
and recorded among the land records of Caroline county did manumit and set free
a certain negro woman Esther to be free and at perfect liberty from and after the
date of the said manumission and the said negro woman named Esther (now
calling herself Esther Tillotson) having made application to me for a Certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the Oath of Henrietta Byrn of Caroline county that the
said negro woman named Esther for whom this Certificate is made is the same
person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby certify that she is supposed to be fifty years of age or thereabouts
she is about five feet six and a quarter inches high of a dark brown
complexion (nearly black) was born and raised in Caroline county and has
a number of large scars on both arms caused by burns and no other particular
marks or scars that I have observed
               In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix
(seal)       the public seal of my office this Thirteenth day of December
               Anno Domini 1824
