for whom this Certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby Certify that he is five feet nine & an
half inches high or thereabouts of a dark brown complexion was born
in the state of Maryland Deluware and raised in Caroline County
of in the state of Maryland he was thirty years of age the Ninth
day of January last has a mark of a burn on his right
elbow two tolerable large scars on the under  part of his right
arm between the armpit and elbow joint and and a scar of a
fester from bleeding on the vein of his right arm and no
other notable scar or mark that I have observed
            In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name &
(Seal)   affix the public seal of my office this 5th day of August

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:  Whereas on the thirtieth
day of September Eighteen hundred & five Henry Nicols of Caroline County
by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded
amongst the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set
free a certain negro man named Edward Baker to be free on the fifteenth
day of May in the year Eighteen hundred & twenty and the said negro
man named Edward Baker having made application to me for a
Certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case
made and provided and whereas also upon the Testimony of George
Martin of Caroline County that the said Negro man named Edward
Baker for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned
in the said manumission I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby Certify that from his age expressed in the said manumission
he was twenty five years of age in May last he is about five feet
five and a quarter inches high of a molatto Complexion was born &
raised in Caroline County and has a small scar over his right eye brow
length wise his forehead caused by a Cut in a fall upon ice and no other
remarkable scar or mark that I have observed
           In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name & affix the public
(seal)   seal of my office this 15th day of August Anno Domini 1823
