State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas on the second day of August
in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred & six Henry Downes of
Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged & recorded
amongst the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free
a certain negro woman named Maria to be free on the first day of
January Eighteen hundred & sixteen & the said negro woman named
Maria having made application to me for a Certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly in such case made and
provided.  And whereas also upon the Testimony of Mr.s Elizabeth
Nicols of Caroline County that the said Negro woman named Maria
for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in
the said manumission.  I do therefore grant her said application
& hereby Certify that the said negro woman named Maria is forty
four years of age or thereabouts in August next she is about five
feet five inches high of a brown Complexion & was born & raised in
Caroline County she has a black flesh mole behind her right ear
& no other mark or scar that I have observed
                        In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name
(Caroline)         & affix the Public seal of my office this 10.th day

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas on the 29.th day of April in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred & twenty three Shelly Jump of Caroline County by deed
of manumission duly executed acknowledged & recorded amongst the land records of Caroline
County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Esther
to be free from the date of the said manumission & the said negro woman named Esther
having made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the Act
of assembly in such Case made & provided.  And whereas also upon the Testimony of
the said Shelby Jump that the said negro woman named Esther for whom this
Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that the said negro
woman named Esther is thirty seven years of age or thereabouts she is about five feet
one & half inches high of a dark complexion was born & raised in Caroline County
she has a perminent scar on her left cheek from breaking out, occasioned
by the Joue or tooth aches and no other notable ^scar or^ mark that I have observed
                            In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
    (Seal)               public seal of my office the 29.th day
