State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas on the first day of
August Eighteen hundred and five Thomas Cooper of Caroline County by deed
of manumission duly executed acknowledged & recorded amongst  the Land records
of Caroline County did manumit & set free a certain negro woman named
Rachel to be free on the day of the date of the said manumission and the said
negro woman named Rachel having made application to me for a Certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly in such case made and
provided; And whereas also upon the Oath of Samuel Hardcastle of Caroline
County that the said negro woman named Rachel for whom this Certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby Certify that the said negro woman
named Rachel is forty eight years of age or thereabouts in August next
she is about five feet two and three quarter inches high of a black complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County she has a large ^scar of a^ Burn on the
thick part of her left arm and no other notable scar or mark that
I have observed            In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
                name & affix the public seal of my office this 25th day of

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas on the sixth day of October
Eighteen hundred and Twenty Rachel Rhodes of Caroline County by deed of
Manumission duly executed acknowledged & recorded amongst the Land records
of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named
Sidney to be free from the date of the said manumission and the said negro woman
named Sidney having made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided.  And whereas also upon
the oath of George A Smith of Caroline County that the said negro woman named
Sidney for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said
manumission.  I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that
the said negro woman named Sidney is thirty three years ^of age^ or thereabouts on October
next she is about five feet seven inches high of a dark brown Complexion
was born & raised in Caroline County she has a small scar on her left cheek
& no other mark or scar that I have observed
                         In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my my name & affix
