143 1st certificate State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas on the fourth day of May Eighteen hundred and Twenty two Abraham Baynard of Caroline County by Deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded amongst the Land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro man named Joseph Baynard to be free from the date of the said manumission And the said negro man named Joseph Baynard having made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided. And whereas also upon the Oath of Abraham Baynard for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission. I do therefore grant his said application and hereby Certify that the said negro man named Joseph Baynard is twenty one years of age or thereabouts ^he is about five feet nine & a half inches high or thereabouts^ of a black complexion was born & raised in Caroline County has a small scar over the corner of his left eye beginning in & extending in a range with the eye brow towards the left temple and a longer scar begining over the corner of his right eye and extending in a curve down to a level with the corner of the right eye next the right temple and no other notable scar or mark that I have discovered In Testimony whereof I hereto Subscribe my name and (seal) and affix the Public seal of my office this 4th day of May Anno Domini 1822 Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline county Court State of Maryland Caroline county to wit Whereas on the fourteenth day of May in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and Twenty two Joshua Lucas of Dorchester County by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded amongst the Land Records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro woman named Rachel to be free from the date of the said manumission and the said negro woman named Rachel having made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided and I being satisfied of my own personal knowledge that the said negro woman named Rachel for whom this Certificate is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission. I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that the said negro woman named Rachel is forty three years of age or thereabouts she is about five feet one and a quarter inches high of a dark brown complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has a small scar on the wrist Joint of the right hand and is gray headed and no other mark or scar that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my hand and affix the Public (seal) seal of my office this 30th day of May Anno Domini 1822 Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court |
