State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas application
hath been made to me by a molatto man named Griffin Scott for a
certificate agreeably to an act of the General Assembly of Maryland
passed at November session eighteen hundred and five by which said
act free negroes and molattoes are permitted to travel out of this State
upon their obtention of a certificate of being free born and Whereas also
upon the oath of James Pippin of the county aforesaid that the said
molatto man named Griffin Scott for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that he is five feet seven inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in
Caroline County supposed to be about eighteen years of age is of a bright
molatto complexion has a scar of a burn on the left side of his face
in a range betwixt the left eye & ear which he says was occasioned
by falling in the fire when a child and has no other notable mark
that I have discovered.  In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set
    (seal)      my hand and the public seal of my office affixed this 30.th

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas on the eleventh
day of April in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and eighteen Molly
Bracher of said county by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged
and recorded amongst the records of Caroline County did manumit
and set free a molatto woman named Maria Bracher to be free from the
date of said manumission as it appears of record and whereas the said
Maria Bracher has made application to me for a certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided.  And
being satisfied by the oath of Thomas Clendening of the County aforesaid
that the said molatto woman named Maria Bracher for whom
this certificate is made is the identical person mentioned in said
manumission I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify
that from the age expressed in said manumission she is now in her
eighteenth year of age five feet four inches high or thereabouts was born
and raised in Caroline County her complexion a very bright molatto nearly
white has a small scar on the under part of her left wrist occasioned
she says by the cut of a pen knife and no other notable mark that
I have discovered.  In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand
                   and the public seal of my office affixed this 5.th day of
