case made and provided and I being satisfied by the oath of
Doctor Robert stevens that the said negro boy (now a man)
for whom this certificate is made is the identical negro
boy mentioned in the said manumission I do therefore grant
his said application and hereby certify that the said negro
Stephen is five feet eight and a quarter inches high or
thereabouts and (from the age expressed in the said manumission)
is now about twenty six years of age of a brown
complexion has a large scar on the under side of the right
hand near the wrist occasioned by a burn when a boy was
born and raised in Caroline county and has no other remarkable
scar or mark that I have observed
                In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand
(seal)        and affixed the public seal of my office this 12th
                day of August Anno Domini 1818

Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas heretofore to wit
on this eighteenth day of September in the year of our
Lord Eighteen hundred and Eighteen Thomas Burchenal of
Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded amongst the records of Caroline
did manumit and set free a negro woman named Susan
Brown to be free from the date of the said manumission as it
appears of record; and whereas the said Negro woman Susan
Brown has made application to me for a Certificate of her freedom
agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and
provided and being satisfied by the oath of John Hardesty
of the county aforesaid that the said negro woman named
Susan Brown for whom this certificate is made is the identical
person mentioned in said manumission  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby Certify that from
the age expressed in said manumission she is thirty one
