       State of Maryland Caroline County to wit   Whereas application hath been
made to me by a Molatto man named Perre Ash for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to an act of assembly of the said State passed at November Session Eighteen
hundred and five by which said act free negroes & Molattoes are permitted to travel
out of the said state upon their obtention of a certificate of their being free
born.  And whereas also upon the oath of George Sewel of the County aforesaid
that the said mollatto man named Pere Ash was free born I do therefore
hereby certify that the said molatto man named Pere Ash is five feet
eight inches high or thereabouts of a dark molatto complexion was born
and raised in Caroline County aforesaid & says he is about thirty five or thirty
six years of age.  And has no other particular marks which I can discover
                      In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed
(Seal)             the public seal of my Office this seventeenth day of March
                      Anno Domini Eighteen hundred and eighteen

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  Whereas heretofore to wit  On
the eighth day of July in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and five a
certain Thomas Orem of Caroline County aforesaid by deed of manumission
duly executed and recorded did manumit and set free a certain negro lad
called Levin to be at liberty from and after the first day of January One thousand
eight hundred and eighteen.  And whereas the said negro Levin has made
application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly
in such case made and provided and ^I^ being satisfied from the oath of
Hugh Taylor that the said negro Levin from whom this certificate is made is
the identical negro Levin mentioned in the said manumission do therefore
grant his said application and hereby certify that the said negro Levin is five
feet eight inches high or thereabouts of a dark complexion and from his own account
(his age not being mentioned in the aforesaid manumission) is about twenty five
years of age the said negro Levin has a small scar a little broken extending
in a direction nearly perpendicular from above his right eye brow towards
the top of his forehead another small scar or mark on his left Cheek rather
darker than the general colour of his face and nearly on a line drawn from
the left corner of his mouth to the lower part of his left ear and another
small scar above the second joint of his left thumb crossing towards
the third joint of his fore finger and no other notable mark which
