State of Maryland Caroline county to wit  Whereas application hath
been made to me by a molatto man named John Dixon for a certificate
of his freedom agreeably to an act of assembly of the said state passed at
November session eighteen hundred and five by which said acts free negroes
and molattoes are permitted to travel out of the said state upon their
obtention of a certificate of their being free born.  And whereas also upon
the oath of Richard Hughlett gentleman of the county aforesaid that
the said molatto man named John Dixon was free born.  I do therefore
hereby certify that the said Molatto man named John Dixon is five
feet seven inches & three quarters of an inch high ot thereabouts of a yellow
complexion was born and raised in Caroline county aforesaid is about
eighteen years of age and has no other particular marks which I can
discover
                   In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and
(seal)           affixed the public seal of my office this sixteenth day of
                   December Anno Domini eighteen hundred & seventeen

Maryland Caroline county to wit  Whereas heretofore to wit on the
second day of June in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and two
Charles Blair of Caroline county by deed of manumission duly
executed acknowledged and recorded amongst the records of Caroline
county did manumit and set free a negro boy named Peter (son of
Adam then about nine years old) to be free on the first day of January
eighteen hundred and eighteen as it appears of record.  And whereas
also the said negro boy named Peter hath made application to me
for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in
such case made and provided and I being satisfied by the oath of Doctor
Robert Stevens of the county aforesaid that the said negro boy named
Peter for whom this certificate is made is the identical person mentioned
in the said manumission I do therefore grant his said application and
hereby certify that from the age expressed in said manumission the
said Peter is about twenty four years and six months old is five feet
four and a half inches high or thereabouts was raised in Caroline county
is a molatto straight and well made with a flat nose and woolly hair
and no other notable marks nor scars that I have seen
                In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and the public
