Maryland Caroline County to wit

Whereas application hath been made to me for a certificate by
a negro man named Luke Johnson who alledges himself to
have been free born for a certificate agreeably to an act
of assembly passed at november session Eighteen hundred
and five by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this state upon their obtention
of a certificate of being free born.  And whereas also upon
the oath of James Pippin of Caroline County afsd that the said
Luke Johnson for whom this certificate is made is free born
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that he is five feet seven inches and a quarter of an inch high
or thereabouts of a dark complexion was raised in Caroline
County and says he is about twenty years old and has
no very notable marks that I have discovered
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and
           affixed the public seal of my office this third day of
           September Eighteen hundred and seventeen

Maryland Caroline County to wit

Whereas heretofore to wit on the second day of March Eighteen
hundred and four Abraham Jump of Caroline County by deed
of manumission duly executed acknowledged and recorded amongst
the records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a negro
man named Adam to be free from slavery on the first day of
January in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and sixteen
And whereas the said negro man Adam hath made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided.  And I being satisfied by
the oath of M.r Abraham Jump of the County afsd that the
said negro man named Adam for whom this certificate is
made is the identical person mentioned in said manumission
